ENR 2018 Top 100 Green Building Contractors

The market for sustainable design and construction continues to grow. However, the well-ordered world of sustainable design and construction process through compliance with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards has become more complicated, with the growing acceptance of alternatives to LEED. The complexities and unfamiliarity of LEED Version 4 sustainability standards, and the growing client demand for more targeted sustainability options, such as healthy buildings or energy savings, have industry firms scrambling to keep up.

In SF’s Mission Bay, the surprise – and draw for writing center – is the kids

J.K. Dineen | San Francisco Chronicle

The new 826 Valencia writing center in Mission Bay sells pet rocks, lumberjack repellent, fairy lanterns, “foresty smells” air fresheners, unicorn horn polish that doubles as lip balm and walking sticks for “mid-sized creatures that walk on hind legs.”

There is bark and moss on the walls, caves with blue fairy lights where kids can hole up and read, and a large tree sculpture where visitors can dangle messages. Books are available as well — produced by kids at 826 Valencia’s two other writing centers in the Mission District and Tenderloin.

But to most San Franciscans, the biggest surprise about the space at 1300 Fourth St. — the official name of the store is the Woodland Creatures Outfitters Ltd. — won’t be the whimsical architectural flourishes or the unusual goods sold in the store. It will be that the place is full of children — Mission Bay children, to be exact…

Mountain View, CA (May 3, 2018) – BCCI Construction Company (BCCI), the Bay Area’s premier commercial contractor, continues its commitment to community service and social impact across the Bay Area with its recent partnership with nonprofit Rebuilding Together. On Saturday, April 28, members of BCCI’s Community Builders team revitalized the facilities of Research and Respite for Alzheimer’s Disease (RRAD) and Rosa Elena Childcare Center in San Jose as part of Rebuilding Together’s annual Rebuilding Day.

Over the course of the day, a group of 20 committed team members contributed 168 hours patching and painting four large community spaces at the Center. As a busy, dual-purpose facility that serves both seniors dealing with dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as preschool-aged children, the Center had not been upgraded since first opening its doors in 1991 and there was noticeable wear and tear. Contractors Creative Ceilings and Service Painting generously donated supplies to support the improvements. The Center selected their preferred colors—calmer hues for the areas dedicated to the elderly community, with brighter, more playful shades chosen for the preschool children to enjoy.

According to Armond Balaian, BCCI Director of Project Management and team leader for the project, “When we learned about RRAD’s needs and the importance of what they do, their work hit home for some of us, and it felt like the right organization to support at this time.”

BCCI’s South Bay office recently celebrated its tenth anniversary and the opening of a new, larger office in Mountain View. According to BCCI Vice President Debbie Fleser, “We have a strong commitment to the South Bay community, which has been good to us, and we felt it was important to give back.”

Deborah L. Fleser has come a long way from her start as a receptionist in a small construction office.

During a more than 30-year career she worked her way up through roles that included estimating and managing small tenant improvement projects, a leadership position at CIC Associates, and then joining BCCI in 2004. She led projects for clients including CBRE, Cooley LLP, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

Now, as vice president of BCCI’s South Bay office, she spearheads operations and business growth…

Companies tweak their game plans as workers return to the office

Dawn Kawamoto | San Francisco Business Times

The Business Times, along with our sister papers in Sacramento and Silicon Valley, examined the office of the future in a special report. This part looks at how the return to work after Covid-19 is going in the Bay Area. Click here to read Part 1 on the initial return to work and Part 3 on how the office will look in the long run.

A new kind of office

San Francisco-based BCCI Construction, which has 335 employees, has given 129 of its workers access to 87 seats at its San Francisco office and 42 at its Mountain View office.

After government agencies gave Bay Area construction firms the green light to reopen on May 4, approximately 25% of the 129 workers went into the office, said Norma Adjmi, director of human resources for BCCI Construction Co. But over the past few weeks, those numbers have risen to the point where 70% to 80% of the 129 workers have returned to the office.

“What hit us between the eyes were a lot of people are afraid to come back into the office,” Adjmi said. “They had been sitting at home for two months and to come back was daunting.”

To ease concerns, BCCI gave workers a return-to-work pamphlet and online training of what to expect in the office before they arrive. In addition to requiring employees to wear masks, engage in social distancing and use disinfectants on their hands, the construction firm required employees to notify them if they are sick, take a Covid-19 test and report the results.

“Before Covid-19, we never got into our employees’ personal medical business but now we do because of the need to do contact tracing,” Adjmi said. A positive test result will lead to every employee who has been within 6 feet of contact or spent 15 minutes with that person to get a mandatory Covid-19 test.

Cynthia Gage, director of marketing for BCCI, said the company has taken several measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19, such as having one-way corridors, adding HEPA filters to certain work areas, keeping the patio door open for outside air to flow in to increase ventilation and requiring employees to disinfect their hands before reaching into the snack drawer for an individually package goodie…
