BCCI provided a turn-key, design-build solution to create a new district office for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Working closely with a private developer, BCCI provided preconstruction, project management, and post-occupancy services for the interior and exterior building renovation. The new exterior features a main entrance with a canopy structure and lighting to give identity to the institution. New storefront systems were added, and K-4 rated bollards and planters were installed along the front of the building provide anti-terrorism protection. On the interior, USCIS’s new office comprises public and non-public areas that meet strict requirements for electrical, telecommunications, data, and high-level security systems. Public areas include a lobby with screening facilities and guard station; a waiting area with information counters; an application processing center with biometrics capabilities; and a naturalization ceremony auditorium. Non-public areas include private and open workspaces, a break room, a mother’s room, employee restrooms/showers, copy rooms, a mail room, a forms storage room, and a receiving dock.
To meet the Sustainable Sites requirements for LEED certification for Commercial Interiors, the developer and BCCI’s sustainability team worked with the city to establish two new bus routes to service the location. Energy efficient mechanical systems and equipment and low-emitting construction materials allowed the team to exceed the original green building goals set forth for the project achieve LEED CI-Silver certification.
