After the successful completion of Eataly locations in New York, Toronto, Dallas, and London by our sister companies, we were selected to provide program management and construction services for Eataly’s newest West Coast location in Silicon Valley at Westfield Valley Fair mall. The expansion brings the joy of high-quality Italian food to the Bay Area with its unique “shop, eat, learn” format.

Our team provided extensive preconstruction services to control costs and mitigate supply chain challenges, including several rounds of estimates with each design iteration. An integrated approach was employed to accomplish the base building upgrades while keeping the design, engineering, and permitting activities on track to meet the targeted opening date. BIM and VDC technologies were utilized to assist the team with design decisions and to coordinate with suppliers and vendors to ensure material procurement met critical milestone dates. Much of the equipment and specialty materials were imported from Italy, adding another layer of complexity in getting items on site on time.

Construction occurred while the shopping mall remained open, with tenants operating on either side of the jobsite. Quiet hours were observed each day after 9 am to avoid disruption to adjacent tenants and shoppers.

The three-story Italian marketplace includes two large-scale restaurants, a rooftop terrace, a café, a wine store, a coffee shop, a gelato shop, open kitchens and production labs, a market stocked with imported Italian goods, a bakery, and fresh counters for pasta, meats, and cheeses.

The project achieved the client team’s goals, and the new marketplace opened as scheduled despite challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistics. We are currently supporting Eataly with program strategies for additional West Coast locations.
